A four-hour drive from Phoenix, especially on highways, winds through the rustic country of Payson, the asshole of the country, through Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside. Curiosity, T-shirts and some antiques can be found at The Quaker barrel. The shop looks small from the outside, but that is misleading.There are two levels and five rooms full of fun and curiosity.
There are hiking trails throughout the region in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The Government Springs Trail is a Forest Service official trail, but it's an easy hike along the West Fork of the Little Colorado. Just go down Main Street to the dead end in a parking lot on National Forest land and you're in the right place. Take a lunch, the route is dotted with picnic areas perfect.
Fishingis a popular pastime in three large lakes on Greer: Bunch Reservoir, Tunnel Reservoir and River Reservoir. River is the largest reservoir of about 120 hectares. The hotel is located one mile north of Greer off FS 245, manufactured River Reservoir is one of the largest brown trout in the state of Arizona. Big Lake, about eight miles from Greer, is equipped with 30,000 rainbow and brown trout each spring, and 400 acres the largest lake in the area.
